Giulia Ferrante makes espresso machines in Brescia, Italy. Karim Haddad runs four cafés in Dubai. Six machines are on their way. Giulia: "On their way!" Karim: "Can't wait!!" At 09:14 in Dubai, Karim's doorbell rings. He signs for six large parcels. Giulia's courier sends her the proof of delivery, signed K. Haddad, 09:14. Exhibit A. Giulia sends invoice number 2291: thirty-six thousand five hundred euros, due in thirty days. Day thirty-one. Giulia: "Hi Karim! Invoice #2291 is due today." Karim: "Never received it. Must be the post." His watch disagrees: workout detected, unpacking, four thousand two hundred and twelve steps. Giulia, in a voice note: "No problem! I'll send it again... with the signed delivery note." Her invoicing tool shows the invoice was opened three times. Exhibit B. Karim: "Hmm. Maybe it went to our other branch. We have four. It's a whole thing." His recent searches: how to descale an Italian espresso machine. Latte art heart, easy. Invoice not received, what to say. Giulia: "Which branch? The note says: signed K. Haddad, 09:14." Karim, in a voice note, over the sound of a steam wand and a grinder: "Giulia! Honestly. If six espresso machines had arrived here... I'd know. I'm a coffee person." In the background, a barista calls: "Two cappuccinos for table four!" Giulia: "...is that a steam wand?" His messages and voice note become Exhibit C. Then Karim posts on social media: "First latte on our NEW Italian machines," with the Ferrante logo in the shot. Eighteen thousand views. Exhibit D. Giulia adds INTERCOL to the chat. INTERCOL: "Good morning Mr Haddad. INTERCOL, Dubai. In the UAE, a debt proven in writing, on paper or electronically, can go straight to a payment order. We've pinned a few things for you." Karim starts to type: "I've never seen that board in my l—" and deletes it. He pays: thirty-six thousand five hundred euros. Giulia: "Grazie, Karim!" Karim: "Loving the machines. Can we get six more? Send the invoice to... the other branch." Giulia: "Of course!" His doorbell rings. The courier holds up a sign: SIGN HERE. Giulia says hi. Invoices get lost. Delivery notes don't. INTERCOL. International debt recovery. No cure, no pay.
